The results of the prestigious ranking of the newspaper "Utro" and the Municipality of Ruse were announced at an official ceremony in the ''Dokhodno zdanie'' buiding. The best athlete of Ruse was announced the weightlifter from the Heavy Athletics Sports Club "Ruse" Angel Rusev.
"There are few cities in Bulgaria that can have in their ranking so many titled athletes with world and European titles and awards from the Balkan Games. Standing in a hall filled with so many athletes is indeed a very emotional and special experience. Ruse Municipality and I as mayor will continue to do everything in our power to make the sports community feel that its activity is a priority for our city," said Mayor Pencho Milkov to the Ruse athletes.
The ranking is organized annually, highlighting the athletes with the highest achievements during the past season. The results are determined by sports journalists in a special newspaper poll. This year, 21 competitors were nominated and the first 10, who collected the highest number of points, were awarded with a statuette, a diploma and a cash prize from the Ruse Municipality.
The following athletes entered the top ten:
1. Angel Rusev /98 points/ - weightlifting, Heavy Athletics Club "Ruse" - European champion for men in category up to 55 kg. in Yerevan, Armenia, third place at the Olympia Cup in Greece, state champion;
2. Radoslav Rosenov /84 points/ - boxing, Boxing Club "Ruse" - sixth European title for juniors under 22 in Budva, Montenegro, silver medalist at the European Cup, Balkan and national champion, fifth at the World Boxing Championships;
3. Yuliana Yaneva /78 points/ - wrestling, club "Yunak-Lokomotiv Ruse" - European champion in women's wrestling at the European Championships in Zagreb, Croatia in category up to 68 kg, national champion in freestyle wrestling;
4. Sevda Assenova /56 points/ - boxing, Boxing Club "Ruse" - fifth place at the Women's World Championships, Balkan and national champion, gold medalist at the International Boxing Tournament "Strandja";
5. Biljana Dudova /53 points/ - freestyle wrestling, Sports Club "Yunak-Lokomotiv" - bronze medalist at the European Championships for women in Zagreb, Croatia, fifth place at the World Championships in Belgrade, in the category up to 62 kg. ;
6. Georgi Vangelov /39 points/ - wrestling, Sports Club "Yunak - Lokomotiv", bronze medalist at the European Championships for men in category up to 57 kg. in Zagreb, Croatia;
7. Ivan Penchev /37 points/ - paddling, Canoe Sport Club "Georgi Demirev" - two sixth places at the World Championships for men, single kayak /500 and 1000 meters/, bronze medalist in two disciplines at the European Championships for men /500 and 1000 meters/, silver medalist at the State Championships for men;
8. Vittorio Iliev /33 points/ - boxing, "Lokomotiv" Boxing Club - vice European champion for juniors, winner of the World Cup for juniors, silver medalist from Balkan championship, national champion;
9. Dzhan Zarkov /29 points/ - weightlifting, Weightlifting Sports Club "Ruse" - European champion for cadets up to 17 years, champion of an international tournament in Lithuania, gold medalist of the state championship;
10. Ivan Banchev /19 points/ - archery, Sports Club "Jumbo 2006" - vice European champion for juniors, champion of the Mediterranean Cup "Aphrodite", national champion for men indoors, second place outdoors, champion of the tournaments "Zagorski shooter", "Sadovo", "Trakia Open" and "Young Archers".
During the ceremony, an applied athlete, a Paralympian, a disabled athlete, a coach and the 2023 team were also honoured:
- best competitor in applied sports - Eleonora Pavlova - aeromodelling, Sports Model Club "Prista" - gold medalist at the World Cup, first place in the women's World Ranking for 2023, first place in the tournament "Governor's Cup" 2023 - round of the World Cup, national champion in aeromodelling class "F1E";
- best Paralympian - Hristiyan Stoyanov - Athletics, Sports Club Athletics "Dunav" with coach Evgeni Ignatov - world champion of the Athletics Championships in Paris, France, for people with disabilities in the 1500 m. T46 discipline, national champion and gold medalist at the Balkan Championships up to 10 000 m. in cross country;
- special needs athlete - Altan Dalkaran - SC "Olympus - sport is equal" - three bronze medals from state championships in table tennis, bronze medal from badminton championship;
- best coach - Radoslav Atanasov - coach of the weightlifters in TSK "Ruse", one of the personal coaches of Angel Rusev and Dzhan Zarkov;
- best team - the boys from the Basketball Club "Dunav 2016" with coaches Nikolay Nikolov and Ruslan Rusev - champions of the national championship for juniors under 17.
The winners in the categories for the best wrestler and coach, as well as the athlete of the year Angel Rusev received statuettes "Sports Olympus", established by the Honorary President of the Wrestling Federation and Sportsman №1 of the city. Ruse for the XX century Valentin Yordanov. The plaques were made by sculptor Dilyan Khubanov.
During the ceremony were presented impressive demonstrations by the athletes of the Ruse clubs.Pop singer from Ruse - Divna also performed.
The event was also attended by the Deputy Mayors of Ruse Municipality Dimitar Nedev and Encho Enchev, the Chairman of the Municipal Council Academician Hristo Beloev, His Eminence Bishop Makarius of Glavinitsa, the Head of Regional Directorate of Education - Ruse Dr. Rositsa Georgieva, the Regional Coordinator for Ruse Municipality to the Ministry of Youth and Sports Eleonora Gurbanova, the two-time Olympic gold and bronze medalist in shooting Tanyu Kiryakov, the three-time world and four-time European champion in weightlifting and mayor of Nikolovo Zlatan Vanev, the silver medalist in freestyle wrestling from the Olympic Games in Barcelona and bronze medalist from the world championship in wrestling Valentin Getsov, the national record holder, finalist from world and European championships and multiple state champion in athletics Magdalena Hristova, as well as coaches and representatives of sports clubs.
The official award ceremony was hosted by the actress from Sava Ognyanov Drama Theatre Kristiana Tsenkova.
