The citizens of Ruse honored the memory of Angel Kanchev

At a commemorative ceremony today the citizens of Rousse celebrated 151 years since the death of Angel Kanchev.
"Schools, streets and organizations bear the name of the hero, but let us remember not only the name but also the cause of his death. Let each one be ready to give a little of himself for a united and strong Bulgaria, "said in his speech Mayor Pencho Milkov.
On the banks of the Danube River – between ''Twisted Bridge'' and the Maritime Administration, the National Society "Tradition" branch "Angel Kanchev" presented a reconstruction in memory of the sacrifice of the revolutionary under the age of 22. Later, the procession of students and citizens went to the monument of Angel Kanchev on Str. "Slavyanska", where a speech on the occasion of the anniversary was also delivered by the Deputy Regional Governor Detelina Acheva.
Prayer for the dead was performed by priests from the Bishopric of Ruse. The event was attended by the Municipal Wind Orchestra conducted by Maestro Dimcho Rubchev, Elena Dimitrova from the Vocal School "Prista" headed by Dorothea Balyovska and the Youth Guard Detachment at the Municipal Youth House. Host of the ceremony was the actor from the Sava Ognyanov Drama Theater Kosio Stanev.
Angel Kanchev died on March 17 (March 5 in the old style) 1872. In 1868 he participated in the Second Bulgarian Legion in Belgrade. In the summer of 1871 he was appointed by the Bulgarian Revolutionary Central Committee as assistant to Vasil Levski. He played an important role in the formation and activities of the Ruse Revolutionary Committee. On the day of his death, Angel Kanchev had to travel to Bucharest with an important mission to the Bulgarian Revolutionary Central Committee, but at the port of Ruse he was betrayed and surrounded by the Ottoman police. In order not to be caught alive, he ends his own life. His last words were "Long live Bulgaria!"
In Ruse there are two monuments of the revolutionary - near his place of death on Blvd. "Slavyanski", as well as in front of the University of Ruse, whose patron he is.
