Bulgarian-Romanian working group to meet in Ruse for the incinerator in Giurgiu

Wednesday, 01 October 2025

Ruse will host a Bulgarian-Romanian working meeting dedicated to the project to build a medical waste incinerator in Giurgiu. The decision was made today during talks between Ruse Deputy Mayor for Environmental Protection and Communal Activities Nikola Lazarov and Giurgiu Mayor Adrian Angelescu.

The two discussed the project to build the facility on the site of the former Verahim chemical plant and its potential impact on the health of residents of both cities. The investment plan has already sparked repeated mass protests by citizens and institutions from Ruse and Giurgiu.

Lazarov and Angelescu emphasized the need to protect public health in accordance with European directives. The Mayor of Giurgiu reminded that 3 years ago, the Ministry of Environment and Water in Bulgaria did not submit a statement within the statutory 30-day period, which was accepted in Romania as a lack of objections. For his part, Lazarov stressed that the Municipality of Ruse has categorically stated its negative opinion from the very beginning and has informed all competent authorities, insisting on the development of safe enterprises in the region.

The two representatives of the local authorities agreed to expand the discussion with the participation of diplomats, the regional governors of Ruse and Giurgiu, the chairmen of the municipal councils and other institutions. The meeting will be held in Ruse in the coming days.

In conclusion, Lazarov and Angelescu united around the position that any decision regarding the incinerator must be balanced between the need for waste management and the guarantee of public health and environmental protection.
