The 150th anniversary of the hanging of Vasil Levski was celebrated today in front of the monument to the hero in the Park of the Revivalists. The ceremony is a joint initiative of Ruse Municipality and the Regional Administration.
"Many heroes have sacrificed themselves for our freedom, but Levski remains a symbol because he set one main goal in the minds and hearts of the people - that of freedom and unification of the Bulgarians," Mayor Pencho Milkov addressed the people of Ruse.
The municipal brass band led by Maestro Dimcho Rubchev performed solemn marches, to the sounds of which the guard of honour and the Youth Guards formed. Wreaths in tribute to the Apostle were laid by the Mayor Pencho Milkov, on behalf of the Governor Anatoly Stanev, the Municipal Council - Ruse, as well as representatives of political parties and citizens.
14-year-old Michaela Borisova and 12-year-old Konstantin Borisov from the Children's Theatre Workshop at the Municipal Children's Centre for Culture and Art with artistic director Yolanda Dimova performed respectively "The Hanging of Vasil Levski" and "Song for the Apostle".
A funeral prayer in memory of the hero and a thanksgiving service were celebrated by His Eminence Bishop Macarius of Glavinitsa, the Vicar of the Metropolitan of Ruse and priests from the Holy Metropolis of Ruse.
The ceremony was hosted by the actor from the ''Sava Ognyanov'' Drama Theatre Ventsislav Petkov.
We would like to remind you that after a decision of the Municipal Council for Culture of Ruse Municipality, it was decided that the ceremony commemorating the death of Vasil Levski will be celebrated on February 18th instead of February 19th, as it was before. The date has been confirmed by historians, and on this date ceremonies are held in other towns in Bulgaria, including the Apostle's hometown - Karlovo.
