Enhanced checks on drivers of electric scooters and bicycles begin

As temperatures rise and the school holidays start, so do checks on drivers of individual electric vehicles (IEDs), or so called 'EVs'. scooters as well as cyclists.

Control over the implementation of the restrictions set out in Ordinance No. 18 of the Municipal Council of Ruse is carried out by joint teams of municipal police officers and the specialised municipal unit "CPPOS" /Control, Protection, Public Order and Security/ , which carry out daily patrols in the city. Care will be taken to ensure that individual electric vehicles are not allowed in pedestrian areas and that two-wheel vehicles are not driven in pedestrian-only areas. The ban for the Central part of the city and on ul. "Alexandrovska", regulated by the signs placed for this purpose, also applies to bicycle riders, as only the movement of children up to 12 years of age will be allowed.Compliance with the measures will also be greatly assisted by the CCTV system, which operates on a 24-hour basis.

As a reminder, drivers of individual electric vehicles must ride on the existing bicycle infrastructure and, in the absence of such infrastructure, as close to the right lane boundary as possible; to drive with lights on at night; wear a helmet if under 18. It is forbidden to ride on roads and streets where the maximum permitted speed for traffic is over 50 km/h, as well as to ride in areas marked with a road sign B9 - "No bicycles allowed".

Riders of scooters should not develop a speed higher than 25 km/h. For traffic violators driving scooters as well as bicycles, the fine for speeding is BGN 50. The minimum driver age for driving an individual electric vehicle is sixteen years - on bicycle infrastructure and on roads and streets with a maximum permitted speed of up to 50 km/h, and fourteen years - only on bicycle lanes.

In the dark hours of the day or when visibility is reduced, the drivers of an individual electric vehicle must use reflective elements on the visible part of the clothing, as well as drive with a working brake system.

Within a week, the municipal security and security officers will warn the drivers of two-wheeled vehicles, after which, in case of violation of the restrictions, the sanctions provided for in the law will be applied.
