"We have to light the flame without thinking if the oil is small and the flame will burn weak and short. The creator leads the hand that lights it, and with the appearance of a tiny flame the world changes completely. " With these words, Mayor Pencho Milkov greeted the attendees at the solemn celebration of Hanukkah - one of the holiest holidays in the Jewish calendar. The event took place at the Danube Plaza Hotel and was organized by the Regional Organization of Jews "Shalom" in Ruse.

The mayor, the regional governor Anatoly Stanev and the chairman of "Shalom" - Ruse Panayot Totev lit the first three candles of the ritual candlestick.
Hanukkah is considered among Jews to be a family holiday and commemorates the historical moment when a small group of Jews, the Maccabees, conquered in the 2nd century BC. the independence of his nation. For 8 days, all synagogues light the candles in the ritual candlestick - Hanukkiah. An essential candle called the shamash is lit, which takes centre stage and protects the sanctity of the hanukkiah from dishonour. The shamash is used to light the remaining candles corresponding to the next day of the feast. In every Jewish home, a Hanukkiah is placed in the window, and gifts and treats are given to the children.
