Mayor Pencho Milkov participates in the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe

Mayor of Ruse Pencho Milkov took part in the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, held in Strasbourg on 25-27 October.

Milkov took part in the voting for the new Secretary General of the organization. There were two main contenders for the position - Matthieu Mori from France and Antonella Valmorbida from Italy. After the vote, Mori received 137 votes in support, while 58 delegates voted for Valmorbida.

"Many countries have high expectations of Congress, and we will need an increasingly effective administration to address the historic challenges ahead," the new President concluded.

Among the topics discussed were the evolution of digital technologies over the last 20 years, which has had a significant impact on local and regional authorities, hate speech and disinformation. In this regard, together with the other members of the Congress, the Mayor of Ruse examined and adopted a draft resolution and draft recommendations presented by his colleagues from the UK, the Netherlands and Sweden.

During the days of the meetings, the representatives of the individual member states discussed the Irish Presidency of the Council of Europe and discussed good examples of local government organisation from Denmark, Sweden, the Czech Republic and Belgium.

Pencho Milkov took part in the forum at the invitation of the current Secretary General of the Congress Andreas Kieffer.
