On March 17, Ruse will mark 153 years since the death of Angel Kanchev

The memory of the young Bulgarian revolutionary Angel Kanchev will be honored with an official ceremony and historical reenactment in Ruse on March 17 /Monday/. From 10:30 a.m. on the pier next to Pontoon No. 5, the Ruse branch of the National Society "Tradition" will present a living picture of the events of the tragic day when, captured by the Ottoman police, Kanchev ended his life.

After the end of the reenactment, those present will head to the monument to the revolutionary on Slavyanski Blvd., where the official ceremony on the occasion of the tragic anniversary will begin at 11 a.m. The Municipal Brass Band, the XIII Youth Guards Detachment at the Municipal Youth Center, graduates of the Children's Vocal Group "Sun" at the Municipal Children's Center for Culture and Art and the "Angel Kanchev" Elementary School - Ruse will participate. A requiem prayer will be served by priests from the Holy Metropolis of Ruse. Registration of educational institutions, community centers and other organizations in the official order for laying wreaths is until March 14 at the email address pr@ruse-bg.eu.

The movement of cars in the area of ​​the monument will be suspended between 10:45 and 11:30, and drivers are urged to free the area from parked vehicles.

Angel Kanchev was born in Tryavna and died at the age of 22 in Ruse. He participated in the Second Bulgarian Legion in Belgrade, and in the summer of 1871 he was appointed by the Bulgarian Revolutionary Committee as an assistant to Vasil Levski, with whom he became a close friend. He played an important role in the formation and activities of the Ruse Revolutionary Committee. An excellent speaker, he gave speeches, gave talks in schools and churches, collected over 1,000 folk songs, and also cared for the spiritual growth of the Bulgarians. On March 17, 1872 /March 5, old style/ Angel Kanchev was supposed to travel to Bucharest with an important mission in the Bulgarian Red Cross, but at the port of Ruse he was betrayed and surrounded by the Ottoman police. In order not to be captured alive, he ended his life himself. His last words were "Long live Bulgaria!".
