"Let us remember the lessons of the past about unity and honor. Let's pass them on to our children, so they can grow up inspired by the native. To remember the power of "First Things" and to build the future of Ruse". With these words, Mayor Pencho Milkov addressed the attendees at the ceremony marking the 145th anniversary of the Liberation of Ruse from Ottoman rule.
The feast was celebrated with a thanksgiving prayer of the Holy Metropolis of Ruse. Dozens of children and students, municipal councilors, politicians and citizens laid wreaths and flowers at the Eternal Flame in the Pantheon of the Revivalists.
The Director of the Regional History Museum - Ruse, prof. Nikolay Nenov, as well as the MP of the Bulgarian minority in the Romanian Parliament Georgi Nakov.
In front of the building of the Pantheon the members of the National Society "Tradition" branch Ruse presented an exposition of Bulgarian weapons from the XIX and XX centuries.
On February 20, 1878, Russian troops entered Ruschuk, led by General Totleben. He was accompanied by 200 officers, an infantry brigade with artillery and 3,000 Cossacks.
During the Russo-Turkish War of Liberation (1877-1878) the inhabitants of Ruse and the surrounding villages also took part in the fighting. From the beginning of the war Toma Kardjiev was a scout and translator in the 13th Corps of Prince Dondukov-Korsakov. The Red Water Chetnik Atanas Uzunov fought at Stara Zagora and Shipka. One of the founders of the Revolutionary Committee in Ruse, Radi Ivanov, was enlisted as a non-commissioned officer in the 12th Hussars regiment. Petrana Obretenova, the elder daughter of Baba Tonka, is a nurse of the 12th troop in the Svishtov hospital. More than a hundred people from Ruse participate in the Regiment, many of whom fall in the fighting.
