Ruse hosts the third meeting of the Interreg VIA Romania-Bulgaria Strategic Council

The Strategic Council, responsible for the preparation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the Integrated Territorial Strategy for the development of the cross-border area Romania-Bulgaria, held its third meeting in Ruse. It is linked to the development of the Eurovelo 6 cycle route.
Representatives of public institutions, local and regional authorities, NGOs and business gathered in the meeting room of the Danube Hotel. On behalf of the Ruse Municipality, the Mayor Pencho Milkov, the Deputy Mayor Zlatomira Stefanova and Ivaylo Kadishev, Director of the International Policies, Economic Activities and Analyses Directorate attended the event.
"The creation of a cycle route - part of Eurovelo 6 along the Danube, which is one of the strategic projects of the programme, has the potential to revitalise the adjacent settlements, making them more recognisable and valued. For the local population this can present an opportunity for active safe transport", said Mayor Pencho Milkov in his welcoming speech.He stressed the importance of identifying the route and its alternatives, sustainability and safety. And last but not least - to be accepted by local communities. "The task of the Strategic Board is of utmost importance for the presentation of the cross-border region in an attractive and accessible way," Milkov stressed.
The agenda of the meeting also included the election of the chair and co-chair, respectively from Romania and Bulgaria. In 2023, the work of the Council will be led by Oana Turturika and in 2024 - by the Mayor of Pavlikeni.
A significant part of the talks was related to the approval of the inception report "Development of an Integrated Territorial Strategy for the Development of the Romania-Bulgaria Cross-border Area", as well as the discussion of the next steps in the implementation of the contract for the "Development of an Integrated Territorial Strategy for the Romania-Bulgaria Cross-border Area".
