In Hall 1 of the municipal administration building, a conference was held, jointly organized by the Municipality of Ruse and WWF Bulgaria, dedicated to the sustainable development of renewable energy sources (RES).
The event was part of the "ReNewLand" project, implemented with the financial support of the European Climate Initiative (EUKI) at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK).
Project manager Raina Popova presented the current challenges facing the spatial planning of RES in Bulgaria, as well as the need for clearly defined zones for accelerated development of this type of energy.
During the discussion, it was emphasized that the lack of an integrated national strategy for the deployment of RES capacity hinders the energy transition, especially when it must be in balance with the protection of biodiversity and the interests of local communities.
Within the framework of the project, the Municipality of Ruse has been selected as a pilot municipality among the large Bulgarian municipalities. The main goal of the partnership is the pilot implementation of a methodology for mapping territories suitable for accelerated but sustainable development of renewable energy – with minimal impact on the natural environment.
By holding this conference, Ruse is taking an active role in creating a sustainable and balanced energy model that can serve as an example for other municipalities in the country.
