Ruse Library celebrated its 135th birthday

Deputy Mayor Dimitar Nedev presented the team with a glass plaque of Ruse Municipality



Today the Regional Library "Lyuben Karavelov" - Ruse celebrates its 135th anniversary. The festive program included a musical concert, a special exhibition and an art workshop in the children's department "Library".

"The library is one of the most important cultural institutions in Ruse and thanks to your efforts it does not cease to establish itself as a temple of knowledge, reminding us of the ideas of the Renaissance", congratulated the Deputy Mayor Dimitar Nedev. He noted that along with the rich literary collection, the library is also distinguished by the extremely diverse events and initiatives it organizes for young and old. As a token of appreciation on behalf of Mayor Pencho Milkov he presented the librarians with a glass plaque of Ruse Municipality.

Director Teodora Evtimova thanked her colleagues for their dedicated work, as well as the many partners, with whose support the team has implemented a number of educational projects. Congratulations on the occasion of the jubilee were sent by Dr. Victoria Ivanova - Director of the University Library at RU "Angel Kanchev", Tolya Chorbadzhieva - Director of the State Archive-Ruse, prof. Krasimir Enimanev - chairman of the Ruse Chamber of Commerce, Maria Todorova from the Art Gallery, and Stoyan Stoyanov-Komitski from the "Hristo Botev 1908 - Ruse"- folk community center.

The program continued with piano performances of the young talents from the National School of Arts "Prof. Veselin Stoyanov", as well as with songs and dances by the graduates of "Flamingo" ETNO.

On the occasion of the 135th anniversary, a special exhibition has been organized and can be viewed by visitors. It includes books and periodicals up to and including 1878. the original of the first printed book in Bulgaria - "Nedelnik" by Sofroni Vrachanski (1806), parts of the personal libraries of Acad. Mikhail Arnaudov and Zahari Stoyanov.Another unique exhibit is the oldest book the library has - "Evangelion" published in 1690 in Lviv. The exhibition is complemented by the library's collection of mini-editions, including the smallest book, measuring 3 cm. Just below it is the longest book - the fairy tale "Grandfather's Mitten" in a 3-meter edition.

Lyuben Karavelov Regional Library is one of the oldest cultural institutions in Bulgaria. Established in 1888, a few months before the founding of Sofia University "Kliment Ohridski", the library has developed continuously over the years. Today it is one of the few libraries in Bulgaria whose collection is fully electronic, and the management's wishes are to introduce artificial intelligence capabilities in time so that the staff can have more time with the readers.
