Tuesday, 16 September 2025

The municipal councilors decided today to support the initiative to build a bust-monument to Stefan Karadzha in the city of Tulcea, Romania. It was voted to allocate 10,000 leva from the municipal budget at the proposal of Mayor Pencho Milkov. The idea for erecting the monument came from the Bulgarian Embassy in Bucharest and is dedicated to the 185th anniversary of the birth of the prominent Bulgarian revolutionary.

“The people of Ruse are proud of the fact that our city is the largest donor to this patriotic cause,” said Mayor Milkov. He also stated that the amount was increased from 3,000 to 10,000 leva, after an analysis of the capabilities of the Ruse Municipality.

The funds will be transferred to the donation account of the Bulgarian-Romanian Chamber of Commerce, which is responsible for the financial support of the project.

Tulcea was chosen because of its particularly important role in the life of Stefan Karadzha, who lived and worked there between 1854 and 1862, as well as because of the Bulgarian community in the city.

With the assistance of the Ruse Municipality, the consent of the sculptor Georgi Radulov – author of the existing monument to Stefan Karadzha in Ruse, which will be reproduced in Tulcea, was secured. A cast has already been made, and a local architect is preparing the necessary documentation for the construction of the monument.

The total cost of the project amounts to about 40,000 leva and includes costs for copyright and royalties, production of the bronze bust, design services, transport and installation, as well as administrative fees. Donations are currently being collected, and the names of the donors will be immortalized on a plaque placed next to the monument.

The official opening of the monument in Tulcea is planned for November, with Ruse's support for the initiative being further proof of the city's commitment to preserving historical memory and the active cultural and diplomatic partnership between Bulgaria and Romania.
