Mayor Pencho Milkov met with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Swiss Confederation to Bulgaria H. E. Raimund Furer during his visit to Ruse. The talks focused on topics related to the development of the city and the region, the investment environment and its importance as a border point in the context of the partial accession of our country to Schengen.
Pencho Milkov introduced the Swiss diplomat to the projects implemented by the local administration over the past four years, bringing to the fore the development of Ruse Airport as key to modernizing the region. The need for Bulgaria's early full-fledged accession to the Schengen area was also discussed, which will lead to an easing of traffic at the border at the Danube city.
"Ruse is the most affected city in Bulgaria by the decision of our country to remain outside Schengen. Bulgaria and Romania are members of the European Union, but there is a border zone between us, and every day the huge traffic of trucks from Europe to Asia passes through Bulgaria and a large part of it is through Ruse. This definitely affects our natural environment, the quality of the air and the right to a healthy life of the people of Ruse", emphasized Pencho Milkov.
During the meeting H. E. mr Furrer also noted the importance of the long-standing relations between Ruse and the Confederation. The Swiss Ambassador is on a two-day visit to the city, and yesterday he and his team were guests at the closing of the International Festival "March Music Days".
