Ruse Municipality takes part in the celebration of the European Day of Organ, Tissue and Cell Donation and Transplantation. On 7 October /Saturday/ at 7 pm the building of the Pantheon of the Revivalists will be illuminated in green as a sign of solidarity.
The motto of the initiative this year is "Your present is their future!" and the main goal is to raise public awareness about the meaning and importance of donation and transplantation as an opportunity to save lives.
To date, 849 Bulgarian citizens are waiting for their chance for a second life. Since the beginning of the year, 17 donor situations have been successfully implemented in the country, giving 42 people a chance for life. 141 hematopoietic stem cell transplants and 685 tissue transplants were performed.
Globally, the number of people in need of organ transplants continues to far exceed the number of organs provided. According to Council of Europe averages, 39 thousand people received a transplant in 2022, while 48 thousand are new patients registered on waiting lists. This means that every hour approximately five new patients are added to the list of those hoping for their second chance. On average, 19 patients a day fail to wait for their transplant.
As a sign of solidarity, 19 Bulgarian municipalities will simultaneously illuminate the facades of their iconic buildings or sites in green light - the colour of donation and transplantation.
The initiative of the Executive Agency "Medical Supervision" is to promote the meaning and importance of donation and transplantation.
