The share of separated waste in Ruse continues to grow

Tuesday, 18 October 2022

The trend of a steady increase in the share of sorted fractions of mixed municipal waste in Ruse continues. This was reported at the last, 26th, meeting of the General Assembly of the Regional Waste Management Association, which includes the municipalities of Ruse, Tutrakan, Slivo Pole, Vetovo and Ivanovo.

The monthly separated quantities achieved by the separation plant are around 8. 02 %. Of the total waste, an additional 30% of the sub-sieve fraction could be separated, against a target of 35% .

"When I took office as mayor, the proportion of waste separated was less than 1%. Now Ruse Municipality has provided employees who work on the scales of the separating plant and the Regional Landfill and control continuously whether the indicated quantities are real", said Mayor Pencho Milkov.

Ruse Municipality has also sent a letter to the "Regional Inspectorate for Environment and Water"-Ruse requesting an agreement in principle for the reimbursement of the costs incurred for the transportation and collection of construction waste from households. This year, the local government has placed 15 specialized containers in which citizens can dispose of waste from repairs and construction activities free of charge.

The representatives of the Association agreed on a collective application for the opening of the call under the priority "Waste" of the new Environment Programme for the period 2021-2027.

In addition to being environmentally friendly, the reduction of landfilled waste has a positive economic impact on Ruse residents, as according to the Waste Management Act, municipalities pay a levy to the Ruse Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water for each tonne landfilled.

It is important to know that the contents of each of the grey household waste bins in the municipality are first sent for separation. Any rubbish left around the receptacle is collected by a separate bulky waste truck, which is transported directly to the regional landfill.

Ruse Municipality reminds that by disposing of their waste in the containers and not around them, Ruse residents help to recycle the materials and reduce the amount of landfilled waste and the corresponding amounts for deductions that we all pay to the state.
