736 children from kindergartens in the municipality of Ruse were consulted free of charge under the municipal program "Let's Save the Eyes of Children". The information campaign was carried out between 26 May and 30 November for the pupils of the fourth group of educational establishments.

The consultations were performed according to the schedule by an ophthalmologist and optometrist pediatric refraction  Dr. Natalia Glavanova  with mobile equipment for photo-retinoscopy.

The results showed that out of 736 children consulted, 95 children or 13% had eye health problems. They are categorized into 7 different categories - hypermetropia /33 children/, astigmatism /29 children/, myopia and/or spasm of accommodation /8 children/, anisometropia/ amblyopia /14 children/, strabismus/ heterophoria /problems related to ocular motility - 9 children/, craniocerebral nerve paresis /1 child/ and coloboma of the iris of one eye /1 child/. All covered children with detected disorders received a recommendation for a detailed in-office eye examination.
A lecture on "Vision in children" was held for the nurses from the health offices in kindergartens. The participants received information about the most common eye diseases in children, the features of the pediatric visual system, the types of refractive errors and the change of clinical refraction during the years of general growth in children. The medical specialists were explained what is "lazy eye" or amblyopia, which are the risk groups of children and the difficulties in diagnosis and treatment. It was explained through pictures what is strabismus and pseudostrabismus.

In children in the age group observed, eye problems are most commonly associated with blurred vision, which occurs in almost one in eight children. Three of the children in the study had a sensory underdevelopment of the visual brain center, making the problem not only ocular but also neurological, but correctable by age 7-8.

The programme of Ruse Municipality will continue in the new school year 2024/2025. It will enable to raise awareness of parents about children's eye health problems, to reduce the risk of neglect of children's vision problems, and to reach more children from kindergartens in the municipality.
