Geographical characterization

The Municipality of Ruse is in Northeastеrn Bulgaria. To the north is the Danube River which separates  Bulgaria from Romania.  The distance to the river mouth is 496 km.

Ruse is 324 km away from Sofia and 60 km away from Bucharest.  The Danube River links Ruse to ten countries:  Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova and the Ukraine.

The city of Ruse is the administrative seat of the District of Ruse.The District of Ruse comprises the municipalities of Slivo Pole, Ivanovo, Borovo, Byala, Vetovo, Dve Mogili and Tsenovo. Moreover, Ruse is the administrative centre of the North Central Planning Region which includes the municipalities of Ruse, Veliko Tarnovo, Pleven, Gabrovo and Lovech.

Ruse is located on the Southern Danube river bank. Thearea is elliptical in shape and stretches over 11 km along the riverbank. The average altitude is 45.5m.

The city has a distinct central area, residential areas,and two industrial zones-the East Zone and the West Zone - where most of local industrial activity takes place.
