The acceptance of nominations for this year's Sportsman of the Year poll has begun. The event, which is organized by the Municipality of Ruse and the newspaper "Utro", will be held on January 14. The distinguished athletes for 2025 will compete in 4 categories.

The nominations are traditionally proposed by sports clubs, after which the media vote for their Top 10. This year, the deadline for submitting proposals for the award is November 22. Clubs should send the athletes they consider deserving to the email utro@utroruse.com .

During the solemn ceremony, the prestigious sports awards will be awarded in the categories for best athlete, team, coach and practitioner. The criteria according to which the athletes will be voted for are their successes in Olympic, World, European, Balkan and Republican championships, respectively.

The competitors of the Ruse Judo Club “Lokomotiv” demonstrated excellent preparation and strong performance at the 11th edition of the International Tournament “Lokomotiv Sofia 2025”.

Over 400 judokas from Greece, North Macedonia, Serbia and Bulgaria participated in the competition, which traditionally brings together some of the most promising young talents in the capital’s “Lokomotiv” hall.

A total of 18 awards – 6 gold, 2 silver and 10 bronze medals – were won by the young judokas from Ruse. The club also received two cups: for the overall team ranking by number of medals won and for the performance in the team competition among the youngest competitors born before 2018.

The Mayor of Ruse Municipality Pencho Milkov today kicked off the first Open Judo Tournament "Kano - Ruse 2025", organized by the sports club of the same name. The event, held in the "Dunav" hall, brought together over 300 young judokas from 19 clubs from all over the country. They compete in different age categories - from the youngest 4-5 years old to 15-year-old boys and girls.

In his welcome speech, the mayor emphasized that the tournament unites young athletes, full of energy, will and the desire to win. "I look at you, young wrestlers, and I see determination in your eyes, passion in your hearts and a willingness to give your all. It is moments like these that make us proud! You are proof that with hard work, faith in yourself and the support of your coaches and families, any goal is achievable," said Milkov. He thanked the organizers for their efforts and wished the club's chairman, Sensei Plamen Georgiev, that this prestigious tournament would become a tradition for Ruse.

Among the official guests at the opening were Hristo Maev - Secretary General of the Bulgarian Judo Federation, PhD. Rositsa Georgieva - Head of the Regional Department of Education, Lachezar Ivanov - Director of ME "Sports Properties", the Director of the Sports School Evgeni Nedev, as well as masters of sports, multiple champions of Bulgaria, honored coaches and former judo competitors. A musical greeting to the audience was presented by the 6-year-old bagpiper Alexander Kaloyan Kolev, and Daria Stefanova performed the national anthem of Bulgaria.

“Organizing such a tournament is a real challenge – it takes a lot of time, effort and resources. That is why I would like to express my immense gratitude to the Municipality of Ruse, the Bulgarian Judo Federation and local businesses for their support. Together we have proven that when there is desire and unity, things happen,” said Sensei Georgiev at the opening.

The competition is held in 65 categories. 65 gold, 65 silver and 120 bronze medals have been prepared for the winners. This year the tournament will take place over one day, and the organizers’ ambition is for it to acquire international status in the next edition and be in a two-day format, covering all age groups.

Dozens of volunteers responded today to the initiative of the Ruse Municipality to clean the Nikolovo dam. The action began at 10 a.m. from the Rowing Base to the motel and continued with the active participation of citizens of all ages. The goal of the event was to restore the cleanliness and natural beauty of the dam, which is a favorite place for recreation and sports for Ruse residents.

At the beginning of the action, a short briefing was held for the participants, who were given safety instructions and guidelines for the distribution of the cleaning areas. The volunteers went around the area around the reservoir and removed waste both on the shore and on the dry sections at the bottom of the dam. Among the discarded garbage were car and tractor tires, plastic, glass bottles, cans, as well as various types of household waste. The members of the "Feeder Fishing Ruse" Sport Fishing Club with chairman Rumen Denchev and the "Lipnik Ruse" Fishing Association were also very active in the event.

The Mayor of Ruse, Pencho Milkov, also joined the campaign and thanked all the volunteers for their active position and efforts in the name of a cleaner and more beautiful environment. In his meetings with the citizens, he emphasized that their participation is an example of responsibility and love for their favorite place. "I am impressed by so many people who came with the desire to do something good for our lake. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your civic position and for not remaining indifferent. Together we are making the municipality cleaner and more pleasant to live in," said the mayor.

As a result of the day-long efforts, the volunteers filled 6 containers with different types of waste. The Municipality of Ruse provided gloves and bags, teams from ME "Parkstroy" placed containers for collecting waste on both sides of the dam - at the Rowing Base and at the parking lot by the new bridge. The company's employees also ensure the timely removal of the collected waste.

The Municipality of Ruse thanks everyone who responded to the initiative and donated their time and energy to the common cause, showing that caring for the common welfare is a priority for the people of Ruse.

With a military ritual and a memorial service, the Municipality of Ruse celebrated today the Archangel (male) All Souls' Day. The solemn event was held in front of the Memorial to the Ruse residents who died in the wars for national unification at 120 Aleksandrovska Street, where officials, servicemen and citizens gathered to honor the memory of those who died for the Liberation of Bulgaria, of the participants in the wars for national unification and of the Bulgarian servicemen who gave their lives in peacekeeping operations and in the performance of their military duty in peacetime.

The ceremony began at 11:30 with the formation of a guard of honor. Then the anthem of the Republic of Bulgaria sounded, performed by the Municipal Brass Band with conductor Dimcho Rubchev. The ceremony was hosted by the actor from the ''Sava Ognyanov'' Drama Theater, Ivaylo Spasimirov, who recited the poem "One Killed" by Dimcho Debelyanov.

Mayor Pencho Milkov addressed the attendees with an official speech. He stated that Ruse will always be a city that remembers its heroes and does not forget its history. “Today we bow down to those who bequeathed us our Freedom and our Fatherland. On this day, the All Souls’ Day of the Archangel, we express our immeasurable gratitude to every Bulgarian warrior who laid their bones before the altar of the Motherland. Their sacrifice is a living lesson in duty, honor and patriotism. As long as we remember their feat, Bulgaria will endure. May the power of their faith and love for the Fatherland illuminate our path forward. May the memory of their exploits make us better, more responsible and more united as a nation. I thank all who are here today to share this sacred moment of humility and gratitude,” said the mayor.

Regional Governor Dragomir Draganov also addressed the audience, emphasizing the role of the All Souls’ Day of the Archangel as a day of national unity and remembrance.

A requiem prayer and a memorial service in memory of the fallen Bulgarian soldiers were served by priests from the Holy Metropolis of Ruse. After the memorial service, the flag was lowered and those present honored the memory of the fallen heroes with a minute of silence, while the Municipal Brass Band performed "Kol slaven".

Wreaths in memory of those who died in the wars were presented by official delegations, and citizens had the opportunity to lay flowers in front of the memorial.

The ceremony ended with the performance of the Anthem of the Bulgarian Army "Great is our soldier".
