A solemn celebration of the 100th anniversary of the organized canoe-kayaking in Bulgaria was held in Plovdiv. The event brought together prominent personalities, athletes, coaches, activists and honorary guests from Bulgaria and abroad.
The ceremony was opened by the Chairman of the Bulgarian Canoe-Kayak Federation and Deputy Mayor for Sports and Youth Activities in the Municipality of Plovdiv Nikolay Buhalov. Among the officials were the Mayor of Ruse Municipality Pencho Milkov and the Deputy Mayor for Sports and Youth Activities Borislav Rachev.
"This remarkable holiday is a reason for pride and recognition of the efforts and achievements of all athletes, coaches and activists who have contributed to the development and popularization of canoe kayaking in our country over the years. The Bulgarian Canoe Kayak Federation has proven more than once that with hard work, dedication and love for sports, significant success can be achieved at national and international level.The achievements of our competitors are an inspiration for the younger generations and an example of how with perseverance and discipline all challenges can be overcome," Pencho Milkov greeted the attendees of the event.
He presented Nikolay Buhalov with an honorary statuette of the Monument of Freedom in Ruse and a painting with a view from the central part of the city. For his part, Buhalov presented Milkov with an honorary plaque for his significant contribution to the organization and popularization of rowing sports in the municipality of Ruse. He emphasized that in recent years the municipal rowing base of the lake in the Lipnik Forest Park has become a center of attraction for the preparation and holding of competitions of national and international scale.
The President of the Bulgarian Canoe Kayak Federation together with the Executive Director of the Bulgarian Canoe Kayak Federation Evelina Petrova delivered welcoming speeches in which they emphasized the importance of this anniversary for Bulgarian sport.
Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Stoyan Andonov said in his address that the federation has every reason to celebrate the holiday with satisfaction and pride, because it has given a lot for the development of sports in the country.
The event was also attended by the President of the International Canoe Kayak Federation (ICF) Tomas Koniecko, as well as members of the ICF Board. They shared their views on the development of canoe kayaking worldwide and congratulated Bulgaria on its achievements in this sport.
The head coach of the national canoe teams of Bulgaria Milko Kazanov presented some of the most remarkable moments and successes of the Bulgarian athletes over the years, emphasizing the importance of traditions and sports training.
In parallel with the celebration of the anniversary, Plovdiv also hosts the World Canoe-Kayak Championship for youth up to 23 years old and juniors, which starts today and will end on July 21.
