The new facility will be the first in Bulgaria that does not use elegas
The construction of a new traction substation in the area of the Eastern Industrial Zone in Ruse began with the first sod. The project belongs to the National Railway Infrastructure Company and its implementation period is 14 months. The aim is to achieve an increase in the capacity of the Ruse - Varna railway line according to the current European requirements.
According to Eng. Simeon Krainev - project manager from the contractor's side, the new traction substation is important not only for Ruse, but also for the railway infrastructure in the region. Thanks to the project, a reliable power supply will be provided to the neighboring railway junctions, as well as a reduction in the company's reactive and capacitive energy costs. The activities also include the construction of a control system and integration into an existing telecontrol and telesignaling system - SCADA, located in Gorna Oryahovitsa. In this way, the need for permanent operational personnel will be eliminated. The facility is expected to be the most advanced in the area to date and will be connected to the National Railway Infrastructure Company contact network. It also includes indoor switchgear, which will be located in a new energy-efficient building.
The project will allow the future electrification of the Danube bridge near Ruse to power the contact network of the bridge, thus making the electrical connection between Romania and Bulgaria possible. The traction substation in the Eastern Industrial Zone will also be the first in the country in which all facilities will be free of SF6 gas /sulfur hexafluoride/, which is a strong greenhouse gas and harmful to the environment. The European Union has a policy of ceasing the production of equipment working with the chemical compound.
The Ruse traction substation is located along the Ruse - Kaspichan - Varna railway line. The line was electrified in 1983. with traction substations Ruse, Chervena voda, Razgrad and Khitrino.
The opening of the site was attended by the head of the municipal department "Investment Design", arch. Plamen Hristov, the chairman of the Management Board of National Railway Infrastructure Company , Eng. Emilia Nikova, the project manager Eng. Nina Postolova, as well as representatives of the contractor company.
There are 54 traction substations in Bulgaria, 30 of which have already been modernized, and the rest are expected to be renovated by the end of 2026. Facilities of this type were put into operation more than 50 years ago, and are already in a depreciated state and with obsolete technologies. In addition, they provide potential prerequisites for failures, oil leaks, and contamination of the atmosphere and soil.
The object "Construction of a new Ruse traction substation, inclusion in the SCADA remote control and remote signaling system, as well as warranty maintenance and service for a period of 10 years" is part of the project "Restoration, repair and modernization of traction substations - Varna and Razgrad, and construction of the Ruse traction substation and introduction of a telecontrol and telesignaling system - SCADA". The project is being implemented in two phases, with co-financing from the Cohesion Fund, as respectively Phase 1 of the project was completed under the Operational Program "Transport and Transport Infrastructure" 2014-2020, and Phase 2 will be implemented under the Program "Transport Connectivity" 2021 - 2027 The value of the contract for the construction of the site is BGN 12,251,407.14. without VAT, with contractor Company under the law on obligations and contracts "Ruse TSEMA".
