Ruse Municipality joins the Space Camp Turkiye program for another year, providing a scholarship to participate in the seven-day space camp held in Izmir, Turkey. Space Camp Turkiye is a training center for students dedicated to space science and research. It was modeled after NASA's Space Camp in Alabama and has been welcoming children and young people from Europe, the Middle East and Asia for more than 20 years. Its main goal is to motivate young people from all over the world to build careers in science and technology. Its duration is one week and will be held during the summer months. According to its partnership agreement, Ruse Municipality covers the costs of the best performing student at the time of application, and the other scholarship is from its partner – the Center for Creative Training.
After the competition, a national independent jury selected the two students from Ruse who will participate for free in the program - Konstantin Isaev, a student from Secondary School for European Languages "Konstantin-Kiril the Philosopher" – Ruse, and Nikola Dobrev from "Lyuben Karavelov" Primary School – Ruse. Students aged between 11 and 15 from Ruse Municipality could apply for the scholarships with an essay or video. The initiative is part of the Youth Plan for 2024 of Ruse Municipality.
Along with the students ranked first and second in this year's initiative, Space Camp Turkiye will also visit students who won scholarships in 2023. Due to unforeseen circumstances related to earthquakes in Turkey and the commitment of Turkish organizers of Space Camp to provide a safe and secure environment for participants, the camps in 2023 were canceled. All participants qualified for participation for 2023 retained their right to participate in the camp in 2024, as well as the scholarships won for brilliant performance in the competition. The students from Ruse who won a full scholarship in 2023 are Georgi Bakardzhiev and Sofia Stoyanova from English Language School "Geo Milev" – Ruse.
Very soon the names of the students who can pay for their participation in the program of the space camp will be clear, as they have reached a result close to the maximum and will have the opportunity to leave together with the participants scholarship holders. Once their names are specified, they will all meet with the Mayor of Ruse Municipality Pencho Milkov, who will welcome them before the exciting trip and will present them with the flag of Ruse with which to present their city.
