''The Collective'' Foundation has won this year's EU New European Bauhaus Awards with its project Danube Design Lab - an architectural intervention on the Danube pier in Ruse.
The awards honour the most beautiful, sustainable and inclusive projects for the urban environment, and this year The Collective remains the only organisation from Bulgaria to have beaten more than 1,450 entries from across Europe to receive the most prestigious award for green and community design.
The Bulgarian project is a champion in the category "Champions in Education". It gives young people from vocational schools the opportunity to use their skills as social entrepreneurs and turn the Ruse coastal area into an attractive, accessible and inclusive place for social and cultural activities. Young people are using their design and construction skills to revitalise a derelict riverside site. After the students drew up a design, the Collective worked with them and volunteers to build a new public space with a summer programme of art, music and sport where thousands of people gathered. So the young people changed the city for the better.
The Danube Design Lab is part of a long-term initiative of the Rivers of the City Foundation. It aims for better connection between Bulgarian cities and their rivers and more accessible green spaces and has already had editions in Sofia, Ruse, Gabrovo and Stara Zagora. Festivals from the series "Rivers of the City" are to be held in Veliko Tarnovo, Gabrovo and Sofia. Last year, The Collective again qualified as a finalist for the New European Bauhaus Award, this time for the Sofia Rivers initiative.
